So for a year, we tested and tweaked and optimized.

Finally, after a year of not updating the site in any real way, we updated the design, the template, and the functionality of our home base.

As you may know, all of our sites are on Squarespace. We looooove Squarespace and are obsessed with how easy it is to use and edit.

The biggest change is that we switched templates.

We had been suing “Bedford”, a Squarespace template, for about a year. It had served us really well. Our site converts hundreds of email subscribers every day.

But we also came to be bothered by certain limitations of the template. Just little tiny things that I couldn’t do to make the site look the way I wanted it to.

We switched to “Pacific” and it solved 99% of those issues! We love this new template. It’s super flexible and can do anything we want!

All in all, this project took about a day and a half to complete.

Last August, I made the switch to Teachable for hosting and selling all of my online courses (which are my entire business!).

To be honest, I hesitated to “make the switch” for a long time before we did it.

See, when I first started creating and selling courses years and years ago, a lot of the technology that we rely on today did not even exist.

(This is why I am constantly telling you that you are SO lucky to have these software resources at your disposal that are both easy to use and amazingly robust. I’m not bullshitting when I say that NOW is the best time to create an online course.)

So when I first started selling courses, I had VERY limited options.

I chose the cheapest path. I set up email courses, connected everything with a $10/month payment gateway, and manually did EVERYTHING.

Lately I’ve noticed this strange dichotomy in my industry. It’s made me feel pulled in two directions at the same time. It makes you question when you’re honest, and then question when you’re more reserved with personal things like numbers, experience, and other metrics.

Here’s what I’m talking about:

If you share your personal results and success, people might say things like:

  • “That’s not realistic for EVERYONE to achieve that! Bah!”

  • “Is she bragging about her success and rubbing it in our faces?”

  • “That seems really unrealistic, I have a full time job and 3 kids and I never work on Sundays!”

 

It’s true, when I share my results, numbers, and other metrics with you, I’m not promising you’ll have them too (and certainly not without incredible discipline, hard work, and hustle).

I’m sharing them with you because when I first started out, I read income reports and other people’s numbers and success stories like crack because it fueled me.

It still does. I look at what EOFire can do and it tells me that we can grow like that too. It’s comforting to me, makes me feel like it’s super achievable because you see someone else do it.

I want you to know me and know my experiences before you buy something from me.

I want you to feel like you can trust my story and my results - and you need to decide that for yourself.

Some people have a sort of “rags to riches” story or a very well-crafted “brand story” that they do the whole spiel on webinars.

This is not that.

Guys. There’s one thing that drives me absolutely nuts about running this online business teaching online business.

People assume that only people who sell marketing advice can make real money. People literally tell me “you have it easy, you sell business training. I could never do that in my niche! I talk about saving money/quilting/holistic herbalism/whatever”.

It’s the great big internet marketing lie: that success is only for people selling “make money online!” courses and programs.

Oh my gosh I want to punch a wall right now - because this is SO NOT TRUE!

Case in point:

I’ve made $350k+ from a course about living in a vintage camper. And another $80k in just a few months from a course about putting solar panels and sustainable systems into your house. (yes, me! Yeah! So now just try to tell me your excuses about how “your industry isn’t good for making money with courses”, because I will prove to you it is.
